Vista: I get an error starting up(May 07, 2008)

On Windows Vista mSupply version 2 or later will work fine. However, there is a problem with using the example data file, and when you log in you might see an error like this:

Errror starting on Vista without admin rights

This is because the example data file is in the "Program Files" folder, and on Vista you can't save data there unless you are an administrator.

The solution is:

  1. As soon as you start mSupply, hold down the "alt" key.
  2. You will be shown an open/save window  (if you see the mSupply log-in window, you didn't hold down "alt" quick enough- click cancel and try again)
  3. Click the "new" button at the bottom of the window
  4. Name your new data file and save it somewhere inside your "My documents" folder.
  5. You will now have a new blank data file.
  6. If you really want to use our example data (it has about 300 essential drug items loaded in it), you can download it by clicking here. Once you've downloaded the file, you should unzip it, then either:
    1. start mSupply holding down "alt" as above and select the "example_data.4DD" file inside the "mSupply_example_data" folder that you just unzipped.
    2. If you have already created a new data file as above, with mSupply running, choose File > Open date file and open the "example_data.4DD" file inside the "mSupply_example_data" folder that you just unzipped
